New Fact Sheet on Nursing Home Abuse

Elder abuse fact sheetAll older people have the right to live free from abuse and neglect. Yet, thousands of nursing home residents experience mistreatment every year.  A new fact sheet from Consumer Voice and the National Center on Elder Abuse (NCEA) provides information on what families can do to identify abuse and what to do if you suspect abuse is occurring.

Get the Fact Sheet.

For more information on the topics raised in the fact sheet, listen to the Pursuing Quality Long-Term Care podcast episode, "Addressing Abuse in Long-Term Care Facilities."  In this episode, Dr. Laura Mosqueda, a professor of Family Medicine and Geriatrics, and Beverley Laubert, National Ombudsman Program Coordinator at the Administration for Community Living, discuss abuse in long-term care facilities.

Ombuds Day

Last Thursday was the 5th Annual Ombuds Day, which was created to recognize the important role ombudsmen play, and the impact they have on people’s lives.  Long-term care Ombudsmen (LTCO) are advocates for residents of nursing homes, board and care homes and assisted living facilities. LTCO provide information about how to find a facility and what to do to get quality care. They are trained to resolve problems. If you want, the LTCO can assist you with complaints. However, unless you give the LTCO permission to share your concerns, these matters are kept confidential. Under the federal Older Americans Act, every state is required to have an Ombudsman Program that addresses complaints and advocates for improvements in the long-term care system.  Read the blog from Beverley Laubert, National Ombudsman Program Coordinator at the Office of Long-Term Care Ombudsman Programs in the Administration for Community Living.

Find a LTCO near you.
