New Podcast Episode on How Existing Legal Authorities Can Help Fix Nursing Homes

Ep 43 Podcast Email Header.pngOften the conversation about addressing the chronic poor care that exists in far too many of today's nursing homes is framed around new laws or regulations. Yet, there are steps that can be taken now - using existing federal and state legal authority - to improve care and conditions in our country's nursing homes. In a new episode of the Pursuing Quality Long-Term Care podcast, we discuss four levers of opportunity for increasing quality and accountability in nursing homes with the author of Using What We Have: How Existing Legal Authorities Can Help Fix America's Nursing Home Crisis Nina Kohn, J.D.

Materials Available from Nursing Home Staffing Webinar

Last week, nursing home workers, residents and family members gathered for a webinar with Consumer Voice and SEIU to continue to demand minimum federal staffing standards in nursing homes. In addition to sharing the voices of a nursing home resident and worker, this webinar also focused on how safe staffing is possible. National expert on nursing home finances, Ernest Tosh, joined the webinar to break down the financials and rebut the narrative that the industry does not have enough money.

CMS Memo on Enhanced Barrier Precautions in Nursing Homes

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has published a memo (QSO-24-08-NH) regarding enhanced barrier precautions (EBP) in nursing homes. The new guidance for State Survey Agencies and long-term care facilities updates the use of EBP to align with nationally accepted standards, according to CMS. CMS's EBP recommendations now include use of EBP for residents with chronic wounds or indwelling medical devices during high-contact resident care activities regardless of their multidrug-resistant organism status.
