Welcoming Our New Policy and Program Specialist

Lori WalshConsumer Voice is pleased to announce Lori Walsh has joined our team as a Policy and Program Specialist.

Lori earned a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education at Salem State University in Salem, Massachusetts, working her way through school as a nursing assistant in a local nursing home. She joined CARIE as a Long-Term Care Ombudsman in 1997 after advocating on behalf of Philadelphia nursing home residents who were restricted in their right to vote.  In her 27-year tenure at CARIE, she held several positions but most recently, as a program director where she supported staff on various advocacy initiatives, including managing two long term care Ombudsman programs. Forever interested in systemic advocacy, Lori went back to school during the pandemic and obtained a master’s degree in public policy and management from the University of Pittsburgh. She’s thrilled to accept a policy position working at Consumer Voice, an organization she loves and has supported over the years, including time serving on the Governing Board. In her role as Policy and Program Specialist, she will support state advocacy to improve accountability and transparency in nursing home finances and ownership. She’s thrilled to be onboard and can’t wait to affect systemic change and help to improve the quality of life for individuals residing in long-term care settings!

New Podcast Episode on Advocating for Better Nursing Home Laws and Regulations

Ep 44 Podcast Email Header.pngSince the pandemic began, there has been significant efforts by advocates to create better laws and regulations to protect nursing home residents. The pandemic and its devastating impact on nursing home residents has resulted in many states passing new laws or creating new regulations regarding a variety of areas, including staffing, transparency, and the nursing home workforce.

On a new episode of the Pursuing Quality Care podcast, you will hear from two advocates that have been successful in getting new laws and regulations passed and promulgated. Tony Chicotel, Senior Staff Attorney at California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform and Pam Walz, Supervising Attorney at Community Legal Services in Philadelphia, will discuss recent legislative and regulatory victories and how they helped ensure they were implemented.

Materials Available from Webinar on Hidden Profits in Nursing Homes

In this webinar, Consumer Voice was joined by Dr. Ashvin Gandhi and Dr. Andrew Olenski, authors of a new paper on related parties, “Tunneling and Hidden Profits in Health Care.” The authors of this groundbreaking study discussed their methodology, findings, and what steps they recommend be taken to address the lack of transparency and accountability that allows nursing homes to continuously claim poverty as to why they are unable to provide high-quality care.
